Golubac Fortress

The Golubac Fortress – distance from the Villa 11 km – is located on the territory of the Đerdap National Park, on the right bank of the Danube, 4 km downstream from the present settlement of Golubac. Since 1948, it has been under the protection of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, and in 1979, by categorizing immovable cultural assets, it was declared a cultural monument of exceptional importance.

The fortress is located on high cliffs, at the point where the river narrows, at the very entrance to the Iron Gate. It is built in a fan shape and consists of three parts: the front, back and upper town (with the citadel). It consists of a total of 10 towers and two large carriage gates. In front of the fortress there was a civilian settlement, which today is evidenced only by some partially explored Buildings.

Golubac had a stormy history. During the Middle Ages, many battles were fought over it, especially between the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. From 1867, it was handed over to the Serbian prince Mihail Obrenović. In modern times, Golubac is a popular tourist attraction on the Danube. During 2012, the project of revitalization of the fortress was started, within which a bypass and tunnel, the Visitor’s Center, a complex around the fortress for the purposes of visitors were built. Complete revitalization of the fortress was expected by the end of 2017. In March 2017, a complex for visitors was put into operation with the following facilities: Archaeological Park, Turkish bath – Hamam XV century, Roman house III century AD, Visitor Center, Info desk, souvenir shop, Cafeteria, Parking.
